PAWAPURI JAIN TEMPLE

Pawapuri the most sacred place of the Jains …

Pawapuri was at this place that Lord Mahavira, the twenty fourth Tirthankar attained “Nirvana” or eternal salvation from the cycle of death and birth in the year 527 BC. The Pictures shows the “Charan Paduka” housed in Jal Mandir, one of the 5 main temples in Pawapuri. It marks the spot where the mortal remains of the Lord Mahavira was creamated.
Pawapuri is situated in Bihar, India and its proximity to the capital city, Patna makes it approachable to pilgrims and tourists alike. It is situated on the Patna-Ranchi road and can be approached either from Nawadah or Bihar Sharif.

During ancient times about 2600 year ago, Pawapuri was the part of Magadha Kingdom and was called “Madyama Pawa” or “Apawapuri”, Ajatshatru, the son of King Shrenik who was one of the greatest disciples of Lord Mahavira was the King of Magadh during the lifetime of Mahavir. During the reign of Ajatshatru King Hastipal was the King of Pawapuri. When Lord Mahavira came to Pawapuri he stayed in King Hastipal’s “Rajikshala”.

There are five main temples in Pawapuri – the Jal Mandir, the Gaon Mandir, the Samosaran, the New Samosaran and another temple built by Bibi Mehetab Kumari. Apart from these temples there is a Digamber Mandir near Jal mandir.

Jal Mandir

Jal mandir as the name suggests is a temple in the middle of a lake blooming with lotuses. The main deity of the beautiful temple is a very old “Charan Paduka” of Lord Mahavira. It marks the spot where the mortal remains of Lord Mahavira was cremated. It is believed that this temple was built by King Nandivardhan, elder brother of Lord Mahavira.

Jal Mandir is built in the shape of “Vimana” and there is a stone bridge about 600 feet in length across it from the bank to the temple.
According to the legend, the concourse of the people who attended the funeral ceremony of Lord Mahavira , was so large that the mere act of their taking a pinch of ashes created such a big hollow over the place that it transformed into present tank.
The sheer beauty , along with the peace and tranquility of this temple is a treat to the eyes of the visitors.

MADURAI - SAMANAR HILLS

MADURAI - SAMANAR HILLS

About:
Samar hills or Samanamalai is an exquisite spot, located 15 kilometers away from Madurai. A small hillock, it is home to caves and carvings, dating back to around 1 AD. The carvern here is believed to have been home to Jain monks about 2000 years ago.

These hills have caves where Tamil Jains resided for over a long period of time. It is also called as Thiruvuruvagam. It is worth if you climb the hills in the early mornings or during the evenings.  It has several inscriptions, stone beds and many sculptures. The two important and famous sculptures are the Settipodavu and Pechipallam, that show images of Jain Tirthankaras made by Jain monks in the 9th century.

The thing about the Jainism is that, Jain devotees think even breathing will cause or hinder another life form such as bacteria or something present in the atmosphere and they die without eating and breathing, which they call it as sallakena (death by fasting).   These are evident from the inscriptions inside here. In the foothills, there lies a temple called as the Karuppasamy temple and a lotus pond. There are some idols present in the temple, which were made by the Jains.

This is the place for one who in interested about Jainism and to know about their Lifestyle!

KEELAVALAVU - Ancient Jain sculptures

KEELAVALAVU - Ancient Jain sculptures and Stone Beds.

Keelavalavu (also known as Kilavalavu and Kizhavalavu) is a village in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is located 43 kilometres (27 mi) from Madurai. It is known for a hillock called Panchapandavar Malai or Panchapandavar Padukkai which contains ancient Jain sculptures and stone beds.

Description
Keelavalavu is located in the Melur taluk of Madurai district. It is located 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from Melur. In the 2011 census of India, it had a population of 5686, of which 2847 were males and 2839 females. The village is rich in granite and it is one of the hubs for illegal quarrying in the district.

Panchapandavar Malai
Panchapandavar Malai (Hill of Five Pandavas) is located in the village on the Melur - Tiruppattur road. The hillock contains caves that were converted as adobe by the Jain monks who lived here when their religion flourished in the ancient Tamil country. The hillock is one of the national monuments declared by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The cave contains nine Jain sculptures, including sculptures of Mahavira, the last thirthankara and Bahubali. It also contains Tamil-Brahmi and Vatteluttu inscriptions. The Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions in the cave were discovered by Venkoba Rao in 1903. The inscriptions were engraved from right to left and upside-down. This kind of inscription is only found here and in the Kundrakudi hill. There are stone beds in the caves which were used by Jain monks for rest. An inscription in the cave mentions that these stone beds were sculptured by a person from Thondi.

Quarrying
The granite quarrying in the hillock, carried out by the government and private companies, vandalised some of the sculptures and inscriptions. In response to a public interest litigation filed by the residents of the village in 2008, in 2011 the Madurai bench of Madras High Court banned the granite-quarrying activities of the Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TAMIN) and private companies inside an area of 51 acres (21 ha) around the hillock, citing the presence of a Jain monument of archaeological importance.
